Update on Lean Production Meetings

The first week went really well, everyone was excited and brimming with information. I could not believe how much time in my daily routine it actually saved. Instead of spending my morning seeking out all of the information, it was brought to me. The labor planning portion improved greatly, now I had enough time to schedule all of the operations. But it didn’t last long and the honeymoon was over……….To be continued

Lean Production Meetings

I set a goal for myself this year to inject lean philosophies into my daily production meetings. This has been the greatest time waster for me over the last few years and I feel I am finally up to the challenge of changing our focus. So with my sights set on eliminating waste, I set out to find resources to help me get started. I posed the scenario to some of my consulting contacts and I was pointed to a PDF file by John E. Boyer. The file is called “The Daily Production Meeting- Doing it Lean!” It is a great 10 page guide on getting started. I think I found my inspiration on the first try. Reverse Mentoring

I had the most eye opening experience this year working with the younger people in my organization. I read an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch called ” Young People teach supervisors a thing or two.” Reverse mentoring has been the most significant tool I have used in quite some time. I didn’t use the exercise to hear complaints, instead I was able to hear; what is really important to the younger workers? They told me about their passions, needs and future expectations at work and away. When you hear directly from the group putting parts into boxes, it helps you change directions quickly. With an aging workforce retiring and the younger generation ready to jump on the line, it is important to understand what will keep them productive, enthusiastic and wanting to contribute. It’s even more important just listening to them and letting them know you care.

Starting Over

The Journey into Autonomous Maintenance

My next Lean undertaking will be converting our current Maintenance program from hour based to autonomous. This will take months to put together by myself and better than a year to get fully implemented. I will do my best keeping everything documented on our journey. If you are unfamiliar with autonomous maintenance the definition is: The step-by-step activities when searching for the optimal conditions¬† and production ( an orderly floor) by way of the establishment of basic equipment conditions (cleaning, lubrication, and tightening), and, as a result, the arrival at autonomous supervision (operators’ self control). The people that touch the equipment, also maintain the machine.
